August Awareness: Visibility, Support, and Inclusion

August brings important opportunities to recognize conditions and communities that are often overlooked. Episodic Disabilities Awareness Month highlights disabilities that fluctuate, flare up, or cycle unpredictably, including multiple sclerosis, arthritis, HIV, and some mental health conditions such as OCD, Anxiety and Depression. These disabilities may not always be visible, but they can have a profound impact on daily life, work, and participation in community.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month raises education and support for a rare genetic neuromuscular condition that affects motor neuron function and muscle strength. Awareness helps build understanding, encourages early diagnosis, and supports families and individuals living with SMA.

International Assistance Dog Week begins the first Sunday in August and honours guide dogs, service dogs, and the people who train and rely on them. These animals play a life-changing role in increasing independence, safety, and access for people with disabilities.

Together, these observances remind us that inclusion is not only about recognition, but also about practical support, accessible environments, and respect for lived experience. By learning more and sharing awareness, we help create communities where everyone can participate with dignity.
